Migraine/Headache/TMJ Q & A

What are headaches and migraines?

A simple headache, or a more intense migraine, describes a sensation of pain in the face, eyes, and head. This pain can range from mildly irritating to completely debilitating. It can occur occasionally, or be recurrent and chronic.

In addition to the head pain, you may also have symptoms of a migraine — a severe form of a headache — which may include:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • One-sided pain, either in the eyes or head
  • Blurry vision

Not all headaches are migraines, and there can be a wide range of causes for both.

What causes headaches?

Causes of headaches and migraines are sometimes hard to pinpoint, but identifying the source is key to establishing a viable treatment plan that allows pain relief. The team at Loudoun can help identify the root causes of your headaches.

The International Headache Society has placed headaches into two categories: primary and secondary.

Primary headaches

When the cause of pain comes directly from the head, like with migraines, and tension and cluster-type headaches, they are considered primary. These are the most common type of headache, and usually have a single source.

Secondary headaches

Other reasons for headaches may the result of other problems like temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, or muscle or nerve issues in the neck and back.

Sources for headaches may also be a combination of these causes, or a number of hormonal, psychological, or nutritional factors. In most cases, physical therapy can help improve the pain associated with headaches and migraines.

How can physical therapy help my headaches?

Physical therapy is a known natural, effective approach to headache treatment.

First, the team at Loudoun Physical Therapy explores possible causes for your headache, and any possible neuromuscular connection to your pain.

They’ll assess if muscle tension or injury, neck or jaw joint dysfunction, stress or poor posture may be contributing factors. If so, physical therapy can help to remedy the root causes of your headaches with the following:

  • Manual therapy
  • Individualized physical exercise
  • Joint manipulation
  • Heat/ice therapy
  • Posture education
  • Neck, jaw, and back stretches

Physical therapy can alleviate your head pain, improve your migraines, and potentially treat their root causes, such as TMJ. Your team at Loudoun Physical Therapy will take special care to eliminate your headaches.
